Charles “Charlie” Tubbs, age 90, formerly of Oelwein, Mason City and Osage, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at the Bloomfield Care Center in Bloomfield, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2013, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Rev. Duane A. Lookingbill officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.
Charlie was born April 11, 1923, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Earl and Gladys (Erbe) Tubbs. He graduated from Osage High School. Charlie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On October 10, 1948, he married Mary Lou Barnes in Osage. They made their home in Osage and owned and operated The Fabric Shop. In 1963, they moved to Mason City, where they owned and operated The Fabric Shop, later known as Char-Lou, Inc. During this time, Charlie also worked as a real estate broker.
They moved to Oelwein in 1979 where they operated The Toggery. Prior to Charlie’s retirement, they sold the business. Mary Lou passed away on March 8, 1981. He married Barbara Powell on December 1, 1981, in Nashua. She passed away on December 25, 2011. Charlie continued living in Oelwein until moving to Bloomfield in February of 2013. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and had a passion for golf.
Charlie is survived by his daughter, Laurie (Randy) Schultz of Centerville; his granddaughter, Heather (Tim) Goodrich and their daughter, Hannah, of Des Moines; and his grandson, Derek Schultz of West Des Moines.
He was preceded death by his parents; his first wife, Mary Lou Tubbs; an infant son, David; his second wife, Barbara Tubbs; and two sisters, Phyllis McAlister and Joan Kenny.
