Leona, the daughter of Oliver and Viola (Jacobson) Cummings, was born April 25, 1932. She grew up on a farm in Mitchell County and was united in marriage to George Zacharda. To this union four children were born: Michael, Linda, Alan and Kathy. They raised their children in St Ansgar.
Leona was a stay-at-home mom until she decided to work for the St. Ansgar School System as a cook. After the children left home, she worked at the Senior Center as their cook for many years. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed all the friends she met there. It was a true fellowship with good food, cards, music and activities for all the Seniors.
Her four grandchildren were the lights of her life. She enjoyed spending time with them, going to activities, and especially birthdays and holidays as a family with lots of good food and fun.
When her health declined she lived in the Good Samaritan home in St. Ansgar where she also made lots of friends. Her sister Patricia would come everyday to have coffee and visit her. They had a very close relationship and loved to tease each other in a humorous kind of way.
Leona was a caring and loving person and will be missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sons, Michael and Alan.
Leona is survived by her daughters, Linda (Robert) Griffin of Denver, Iowa, and Kathy (Ron) Rezabek of Mason City, Iowa; grandchildren Heather (Charles) Warren of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Ryan Reeves (fiancé Ashley) of Davenport, Iowa, Lindsay Sanchez of Mason City and Brock Rezabek of Mason City, and step-great-grandson, Nicholas Warren of Cedar Falls; sisters Patricia Bublitz of St. Ansgar and Phyllis Schallock of Osage, Iowa.
