Gordon Wayne Newton was born June 16, 1920, in Mitchell County, the son of Harold and Margaret (Newton) Newton. He graduated from Colwell High School. Gordon proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. On January 12, 1947, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Mehmen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed all their lives in the Floyd and Mitchell County area. He also worked for a number of years at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company.
Gordon was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing in all kinds of weather, hunting including pheasant hunting with his Labrador, trapping, gardening, cooking, traveling, and meeting people and striking up conversations with them. Gordon was a country music fan with Johnny Cash being his favorite artist as he sang "A Boy Named Sue".
He loved his wife, his country, cows that remembered how to get to the other pasture, dogs that earned their keep, making 8 no-trump bids out of nothing and children who caused just enough trouble to be interesting. He will live for many generations through the lives of those lucky enough to have known him.
Living family members include six children, Allen Newton of Little Cedar, Lyle (Veronica) Newton and Dale (Theresa) Newton both of Stacyville, Denny Newton of Clear Lake, Linda Newton Young and husband Bill Young of San Angelo, Tex. and Ray (Catherine) Newton of New Freedom, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two half brothers, Harold "Tuffy" (Willa) Newton of Whitehall, Ill. and Kenneth (Sally) Newton of Hillview, Ill.; and a half sister, Alice "Oopie" Kraushaar of Hillview, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, on May 26, 1988; a great granddaughter, Mallory Newton; a half brother, Tom Mike Newton; and a sister, Dr. Gwendolyn Newton.
