WABASHA -- The funeral for Ralph S. Asfahl will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview, with the Rev. David Frederickson officiating. Burial will be in the Cemetery in Riceville, Iowa, at a later date.
Mr. Asfahl, 91, of Reads Landing, died of natural causes Wednesday (Feb. 21, 2007) at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born April 2, 1915, in Riceville. He married Illa Florence Gibbs in Riceville in 1935, and they farmed in Riceville until 1956. He then went to work for Vikings Pump Co. in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He retired in 1975, and the couple returned to Riceville. His wife preceded him in death in 1998.
He then moved to Eyota, where he met Marvel Mussell-Lint. They were married Aug. 11, 2001, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview, and moved to Reads Landing, near Wabasha. He enjoyed woodworking, making grandfather clocks, watching eagles and living on the Mississippi River.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia Carol (Dean) Davis of Eyota and Donna Schwirtz of Anchorage, Alaska; six sons, Marvin (Carol) Asfahl-Gibbs of Los Angeles, Donald Schwirtz of Winona, Dale (Margaret) Schwirtz of Kellogg, Darald Schwirtz of Oronoco, Dan (Lonna) Schwirtz of Madison, Wis., and Duane (Rita) Mussell of Plainview; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald of Louisville, Ky. Other survivors include a daughter-in-law, Edith Asfahl of Riceville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, a son, three brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call two hours before the service Saturday at the church.
Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran School.
