CHARLES CITY, IOWA — Charles City and Floyd County recorded its first traffic fatality of the year Friday morning when an Osage man was killed in a car-truck collision while on his way to work in Nashua.

Authorities said Dennis Jackson, 34, apparently fell asleep at the wheel and his car crossed the center line of Hwy 218 in the 600 block of South Grand Ave. about 6:40 a.m. and collided with a truck driven by Jerome Miller, 36, of Ionia.

Miller was not injured but a passenger in the truck, John Stevens, 41, was taken to the hospital with shock and cuts and was listed in "not serious" condition.

Services for Jackson are pending at the Champion Funeral Home in Osage with burial to be in the Osage Cemetery.

Jackson, born in Stacyville, graduated from Osage High School in 1955 and served four years in the U.S. Navy.

He married Bonnie Tibbits on August 26, 1960, and had lived in Osage.

He formerly owned and operated a service station in Osage and had been employed at the Hydra-Tile plant in Nashua for the past eight years.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cheryl, 9, and Wanda, 8; two sons, Edward, 7, and David, 5; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Jackson of Osage; one sister, Mrs. Larry Fox of Marshalltown, and maternal grandfather, Edward Gerbig of Osage.

Dennis Jackson, 34, of Osage, Iowa, lost his life Friday morning at 6:40 a.m. in a car-truck accident in Charles City. he was alone at the time of the mishap and was en route from his home in Osage to his employment at the Hydro Tile manufacturing company in Nashua, where he had been employed for the past eight years.

Rev. L. Norris, church pastor, was in charge of the services Monday afternoon at the Congregational church in Osage. Arrangements were by C.R. Champion and Sons, and burial was in the Osage cemetery.

Dennis LaVerne Jackson was born in Lake Mills, Iowa, on March 17, 1936, the son of Clayton and Maurine Gerbig Jackson. He grew to manhood in the Stacyville-Osage area and was graduated from Osage high school in 1955

Bonnie Tibbits and Dennis Jackson were married on August 26, 1960. They continued to live in Osage.

He served with the navy for four years, seeing duty in the Pacific theatre. He was a member of the Osage Jaycees for two years, and was a lifelong member of the Congregational church.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie; four young children, Cheryl, 9, wanda, 8, Eddie, 7, and David, 5; his parents and his grandfather, Edward Gerbig, all of Osage; one sister, Mrs. Larry Fox (Maradee) of Marshalltown; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
