Donald Lee Risting, age 79, of rural Osage, passed away Friday, January 18, 2013, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage, after complications related to a lengthy battle with Lewey Body Dementia.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Avenue, rural Osage, Iowa, with Rev. John Gannett officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Donald was born on August 19, 1933, near Little Cedar, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Ethel (Steelman) Risting. He attended country schools and later graduated from Whitten High School in Whitten, Iowa, in 1951.
Donald was married to Mary Terhark and had seven children. He later married Marjorie (Klemesrud) Mellmann on August 18, 1967. One son, Troy, was born to this union. He worked for the City of Osage from 1962 until his retirement in 1994 after 32 years of dedicated service. Donald was a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School and served as treasurer for many years. He was also 4-H club leader for the East Cedar Hurricanes for ten years, during which time he raised registered Duroc and Poland China swine. Donald enjoyed listening to music, especially Lawrence Welk, Guy Lombardo and gospel. He spent hours playing the organ and keyboard till wee hours of the morning. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed getting his hands dirty.
Donald is survived by his wife, Marjorie Risting, Osage; son, Troy (Trinette Hinze) Risting, Eagle Lake, MN; step-son, Brian (Julynn Brinkman) Mellmann, Rudd; step-daughter, Vonda Howell, Dunmore, PA; step-son, Darwin (Gwen Morische) Mellmann, Nora Springs; step-daughter Lila (Mike) Rehnelt, Hayfield, MN; brother, Ronald (Linda) Risting, Dike; sister, Helen (Mervin) Baker, Grundy Center; fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and twin great-grandsons, Kaden and Kullen Mellmann.
