Marith Fosholdt was born November 9, 1875 at Rock Grove, Floyd, Iowa to Syver Johnsen Fosholdt and Johanna Haraldsdatter Grov, the oldest of their eight children. Her siblings were: John Syversen, Harold Syversen, Ingeborg Syversdatter, Thorvold Syversen, Gabriel Syversen, Isabelle (Ingeborg) Syversdatter, and Lise (Elisabeth) Syversdatter (all surnames Fosholdt, all born at Rock Grove, Floyd, Iowa).
Marith was baptized at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa on December 12, 1875. Her baptismal sponsors were: Ole Kleven & wife, Knud Klemetsrud, and Ingerud Haugen. Marith was confirmed at RCLC on June 14, 1891. She attended rural schools near her home.
Marith (Mary) married Iver Johannes Nelson on May 4, 1902 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Meroa, Iowa. The couple had 2 children:
Ethel Johanna (born June 22, 1903, died August 20, 1923, both at Rock Grove) and Ira Melvin (born December 7, 1906, Rock Grove died April 16, 1971 Long Beach, Los Angeles, California).
