Funeral services for Michael P. Smith were held on Friday, October 7, 2005 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & cremation in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Chaplain Linda Swanson officiated. Burial was in Altus City Cemetery, Altus, Oklahoma.

Michael P. Smith, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness.

Michael was born October 31, 1939, the son of William and Ella White Smith in Riceville, Iowa. He served as an Airman First Class with the United States Air Force from 1960-1964. On April 12, 1964, he was united in marriage to Shirley Holt. She died February 20, 1981.

In Oklahoma, he worked for Scooters, The Tree and the Officer's Club at Altus Air Force Base as a maintenance supervisor. He worked for Quaker Oats, Montgomery Elevator and most recently, Westdale Court Apartments in Cedar Rapids. He loved auto racing, including going to NASCAR events and races at Hawkeye Downs.

He is survived by his daughter Ann (Ian) McGee of Altus, a sister, Margaret Fox, Riceville; and a brother, James (Connie) Smith of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Shirley; three brothers, Billy Jerry and Ed Smith; and a sister, Mary Alice Buttolph.
