Edith Klayer Burke was born November 14, 1890, in Portsmouth, Ohio, the daughter of Elmer and Henrietta (Klayer) Wiley.
After graduating from high school in Cincinnati, Ohio, she attended Ohio State University at Columbus, where she graduated with a BS degree in Domestic Science. She served her internship in dietetics at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Later she did post-graduate work in the same field at the University of Cincinnati.
From 1917 to 1919, Edith was a dietitian at Great Lakes Naval hospital, Chicago, Illinois and Buffalo, New York. She later taught in a private school in Winchester, Indiana in public schools in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Clear Lake and Riceville, Iowa.
On July 24, she was married to Norbert Edward Burke at Mason City, Iowa. They resided in Riceville. In 1966, nine years after the death of her husband, Edith moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where she lived until moving to the Meadow Manor Nursing Home, Grand Meadow, Minnesota in May 1970. She resided there until her death, August 1, 1970.
Edith was a member of the American Legion Auxillary and at one time served on the Riceville School Board, the Riceville Hospital Board and was active in PTA.
Edith is survived by one son and two daughters. They are Richard, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Francis (Barbara) Stier, Grand Meadow, Minnesota and Miss Connie Burke of St Paul; 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Grace Drake, St. Mary's, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Norbert.
Funeral services were conducted by the Reverend J.W. Bohr at the Immaculate Conception church in Riceville on August 4, 1970. Casket bearers included Stanley Milewsky, Richard Beery, Bert Duncomb, Ronald Dempsey, Lloyd Jennison and Marvin Mayer. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with Chisholm Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
