Hans Pedersen (Peterson) Fagrebakken (Fagre) was born February 5, 1842 at Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway to Peder Torgersen (Fagrebakken) and Live Nilsdatter. He was baptized April 17, 1842 at Sigdal. Found birth/baptism record in the Norwegian Digital Archives on-line for Sigdal in Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway 1835-1856, page 80, entry # 23; Witnesses: Kari Nielsdatter Bergan, Ingeborg Vadres?, Hans Anfinnsen, Peder ? and Christian Fagrebakken.

Hans was the fifth of thirteen children. His siblings were:
Dorthe (born May 22, 1834);
Nils (September 21, 1835-February 13, 1873 Mitchell Co, IA);
Torger (born 1837);
Kjersti (born 1840);
Anne Kristine (born October 16, 1843);
Kari (born 1845);
Ole (born March 16, 1847);
Peder (born 1849);
Kristoffer (born 1850);
Soren (born 1852),
Christian (born September 21, 1854) and
Andreas (born September 24, 1856).

Hans was confirmed at Sigdal, Norway on October 11, 1857. Record found at Norwegian Digital Archives for Sigdal in Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway 1857-1878, page 160, entry # 7.

Hans left Sigdal, Norway on April 8, 1867 to emigrate to America with a group of people. Found emigration record at Norwegian Digital Archives, Sigdal in Sigdal 1857-1878, pg. -, entries #10 to 15: #10: Hans Pedersen Fagrebakken born February 25, 1842; #11: Ole Pedersen Fagrebakken born March 16, 1847; #12 Torger Torgersen Bergan; #13 Ragnild Petersdatter age 25 (wife of Torger, #14: Gunhild Marie age 2 and entry #15 Birte age 1 (children of Torger). The group settled in Wisconsin, but Hans moved within a year to Cedar township, Mitchell County, Iowa and began farming at Township 97, Range 18, Section 1.

Hans married Ingeborg Anna Svendsen on September 7, 1874 at Mitchell County, Iowa. The couple had 3 children all born at Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa:
Nettie (born 1875);
Christian (born February 1, 1878, died January 7, 1963 Steele, MN) and
Peter Leonard (born November 5, 1879, died October 12, 1918 Todd, Minnesota.)

Family found in the 1880, 1885 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, IA:
1880: Hans Peterson 42, Isabela Peterson 42, Theadore Peterson 10, Nicolaus Peterson 9, Nette Peterson 5, Sievert Peterson 2, Peter Peterson 8m, Levan (Svend) Paulson 75, Carrie Paulson 72.

1885: Hans Peterson 43, Isabelle Peterson 43, Theodore Peterson 15, Nicolas Peterson 13, Mary Peterson 9, Christian Peterson 6, Peter Peterson 5.

Hans died September 17, 1885 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

In the 1911 Mitchell County Atlas, Sec. 3, page 27, there is a photo of Hans and his wife Ingeborg with caption "Hans, born in Norway, April 18, 1843; settled in Mitchell Co. in 1868; and died September 17, 1884 (in error, dates wrong)".

(Note: Hans was Ingeborg's second spouse, she had been married in 1868 to Hans' older brother Nils Pedersen Fagrebakken (Nils born September 21, 1835, died February 13, 1873). Hans was both stepfather and uncle to Nils and Ingeborg's two sons, Theodore Pedersen Fagre (December 30, 1869 to May 11, 1953) and Nicholai Fagrebakken Pedersen (January 29, 1871 - April 16, 1942).
