Halstein Iverson Nordby was born February 11, 1831 at Nordbye, Sor Aurdal, Oppland, Norway to Iver Iverson and Elizabeth Halstensdatter. He was baptized April 1, 1831.
Halstein emigrated to Black Earth, Dane, Wisconsin in 1852. He married Taran Olsdatter Juvbraaten on July 4, 1858 at Dane, Wisconsin. The couple had 12 children: Iver, Olaus, Elizabeth, Anna Marie, Edvard, Elesa, Hendrik Theodore, Lauritz Halstein, Carl, Thea Caroline, Elisabeth Marie and Edvard.
Halstein and family moved to Cedar township, Mitchell County, Iowa in 1869, buying farmland in Cedar township of Mitchell County and land in Floyd County, Iowa. Halstein became a naturalized citizen on October 7, 1874.
Halstein died November 21, 1896 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.
