Mrs. Berthe N. Syverud whose maiden name was Paulsen, was born July 26, 1822, in Hedalen, Vales, Norway. In 1857 she left Norway and emigrated to America coming to Bluemont, Dane County, Wisconsin. Here she was married to Nels K. Syverud in 1859. They resided in Wisconsin for the following ten years, and in 1869 moved to Rock Creek, Mitchell County, Iowa, residing there until 1887 when they moved to St. Ansgar, which was afterwards their home. Two sons, Ole and John were born to this union, both of whom together with two sons and two daughters of Mr. Syverud by a former marriage, remain to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother. Mr. Syverud died August 15, 1896. The following October, Mrs. Syverud, while walking on the wet sidewalk, slipped and fell in such a manner as to break her hip. She was confined to her bed from that time until her death, which occurred June 16th, 1899. The funeral which was held at the Norwegian Lutheran Church June 19th, was conducted by Rev. J. Olsen and was largely attended. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved relatives. Burial was at the Norwegian Lutheran cemetery.
Burial records indicate the spelling of name as Berit Syverud.
