Mrs. H. Sponheim whose maiden name was Synneve K. Oppedahl, was born May 17th, 1830 at Oppedahl, Hardanger, Norway. She was baptized and confirmed in the Ullensvang Lutheran Church, Hardanger.
She was married to Mr. Ole Sponheim in 1851 and they made their home at the Sponheim farm in Ulvik, Hardanger. This union was blessed with five children: Knut Sponheim, who died October 16, 1911, Mrs. Sam Ellingson, St. Ansgar, Iowa, Henry and Magnus Sponheim, who both live in Mitchell County, and Mrs. L. Eidness, who lives near the Rock Creek Church.
Her husband died in 1864 after an attack of typhoid fever. In 1867 she married Mr. Andrew Sponheim. To this union four children were born: Ole, who died September 23, 1893, Harry Sponheim, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, E.A. Sponheim, St. Ansgar, Iowa, and Amos Sponheim, Portland, Oregon.
Mr. and Mrs. Sponheim came to the United States in 1891 and have made their home in Mitchell County the entire time. Eleven years ago they made their home with Mr. Henry Sponheim, where she lived till her death. Her husband died about three years ago after a lingering illness. Mrs. Sponheim died suddenly March 13th at 11 P.M. She was sick for a short a time that her death came very unexpectedly even to her nearest relatives, some of whom did not have time to reach her bedside before it came.
Mrs. Sponheim, however, during the short hours of illness, was convinced that she would not be here long and she gave several instructions about her funeral. She died happily and in peace at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 27 days.
The funeral took place at Mr. Sponheim's home, March 17th. Rev. Waldeland officiating. She was laid to rest at the Lutheran Cemetery south of St. Ansgar.
