Harvey N. Fischer

December 9, 1938 - August 19, 2012

Biography--

Harvey was born in Austin, Minnesota, to Norman & Pauline Fischer. He graduated from Carpenter High School in Carpenter, Iowa. In January of 1956 Harvey joined the Navy and was on the USS Hancock where he served as a Machinist Mate and received an Honorable Discharge in January of 1962.

Harvey married Janice Johnson from Austin, Minnesota in June of 1961; they had a son Harvey, Jr. and were later divorced.

Harvey resided many years in Mason City, Iowa. He owned and operated Fischer Truck Stop on the old Hwy 65 north of Mason City. He also worked in Charles City at the Oliver plant, Risto Manufacturing & Standard Glass both in Mason City. Later he worked for IMT (Iowa Mold Tooling) in Garner, Iowa.

December 28th, 1983 Harvey married Mavis Thompson of Mason City, Iowa. About this time he took a sales position with IMT and covered the Northwest Territory which included Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. In July of 1984 Harvey & Mavis moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho where they were happily residing at the time of his death.

After working for IMT he worked for Stellar Industries also of Garner, Iowa; and then Aresco Manufacturing in Post Falls, Idaho; Inland Pacific Stamps out of Spokane, Washington, still in sales. In the later years he drove school bus for the Coeur d’Alene School District and was really loved by the kids.

Harvey loved working with his hands and he became a part-time Handyman. He loved to fish, camp with the motorhome, do wood-working and mess with the old cars. His health had been failing the past several years, but he still enjoyed doing wood-working and tinkering with the cars and such.

The weekend of his death he was at the Goodguys Great Northwest Street Rod Nationals in Spokane, Washington, checking out the cars, working in Mavis’s craft booth, selling her purses and showing the ladies the ”proper way” to carry a purse.

Harvey leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Mavis. His son Harvey, Jr. with friend Barb of Owatonna, Minnesota; daughter Melinda (husband)Don Zeimet of Algona, Iowa; Grandson Josh (wife Amanda) Fischer, Great Granddaughter Sophia Fischer all of Mason City, Iowa; sister, Maria (husband Jim) Downs of Live Oak, California; in-law’s: Vickie and Dave Bruggeman of Toeterville, Iowa; Geraldine Thompson of Marion, Iowa; and David Dean Thompson in Toeterville, Iowa; Nieces: Tammy (husband Brandon) Kofoot of Kasson, Minnesota, Stacy (husband Chad) Huhn of Evanston, Illinois; nephews: Connor & Lucus Burr of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Great Nieces and Nephews: Greta Huhn, Aubree Kofoot, Alec Huhn & Grayson Kofoot. Harvey will be missed by many friends, cousins, street rodders and crafters.

He was preceded in death by his father Norman Fischer, his mother Pauline Mezzanzanica, and Grandson Addison Fischer.

Harvey was involved with the North Idaho Medical Reserve Corps and a member of the North Kootenai Good Sam Chapter.

Two Celebrations of Harvey’s Life will be held, one in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on September 22nd, 2 – 4pm at the Dalton Gardens Park and then on October 6th in Toeterville, Iowa, at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery where he will be laid to rest; with a lunch following at the Church in Toeterville.
