ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - John William Thurnau Jr., 82, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday, August 25, 2012, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 28, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Father Donald Bruggeman officiating. Burial will be at St. Ansgar Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday with a rosary at 3:30 at the Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville.

John Thurnau Jr.

St. Ansgar, Iowa - John W. Thurnau Jr. passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, quietly and peacefully at home surrounded by his family at the age of 82.

Funeral service will be held at Visitation Church, Stacyville, on Tuesday, August 28, at 10:30 a.m. with interment following at the St. Ansgar Cemetery with military honors by American Legion. Visitation will be held at Visitation Church on Monday, August 27, from 4-7 p.m. with rosary at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service.

John Jr. was born on August 24, 1930, in Mitchell County, Iowa, to John and Christina (Adams) Thurnau. He grew up and attended school in Brownville, Iowa. He enlisted in the Navy and served during the Korean Conflict.

He married the love of his life, Olga Duren, on May 16, 1951. To their union eight children were born. He worked for Albert and Frank Kerckhove farming until retiring to St. Ansgar in 1999. John Jr. loved country western music and played accordion and harmonica. He sang and played in a band for many, many years. He loved dancing, playing cards with friends and family, and watching the Minnesota Twins.

He is survived by his wife, Olga; three sons: Richard (Judy), St. Ansgar, Ronnie (Denise), Scarville, Scott (Julie), Zumbrota, Minn.; four daughters: Bonnie Morse, Osage, Pam (Curt) Lonergan, Rose Creek, Minn., Sherry (John) Hemann, Stacyville, Mary (Jay) Adams, Stacyville; 20 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, one son Steven, grandson Brett, one brother and one sister.
