Erling Orlando Dahley was born August 3, 1914 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Elmer Obed Dahley and Ida Annette Torblaa, the oldest of their three children. His two younger sisters were: Ilene Marjorie Dahley (born June 9, 1918 Iowa, died March 20, 1996 Coos Bay, Coos, Oregon) and Marcella Elaine Dahley (born January 7, 1926 Mitchell, Iowa, died March 19, 1944 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa).
Erling was baptized on September 13, 1914 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Meroa, Cedar township, Mitchell county, Iowa. His baptismal sponsors were Mr. & Mrs. Ole Torblaa and Mr. & Mrs. S.K. Klemesrud. He was confirmed at the same church on May 19, 1929. He grew up on his parent's farm near Meroa, Iowa and attended the country school.
Found Erling in the 1915 to 1930 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1920: Elmer O. Dahley 28[23], Ida A. Dahley 31, Erling O Dahley 5, Ilene M. Dahley 1[1 6/12].
1925: Elmer I. Dahley 34, Ida A. Dahley 36, Erling O. Dahley 10, Irlene M. Dahley 6.
1930: Elmer O Dahley 39, Ida A. Dahley 41, Erling O. Dahley 15, Ilene E. Dahley 11, Marcella E. Dahley 4 yrs, 4 mos.Erling married Mary Alice Janette Forslund (born December 27, 1916 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa, died August 11, 2008 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa) on July 23, 1938 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa. The couple farmed for 30 years in West Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa and raised their five children. Erling also worked at a wood mill. They moved to North Bend, Oregon in 1968, living and working there until retiring in 1979 to Mason City, Iowa.
Erling O. Dahley died May 15, 1999 at Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Janette; his five children and their spouses; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Erling is buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Iowa.
