DeVere Roman Hemann

DeVere Roman Hemann, 78, of Keokuk, Iowa, passed away on July 4, 2012, at Montrose Health Center. Visitation was at DeJong-Greaves at 1212 Concert Street, Sunday, July 8 from 5-7 p.m. and funeral was on Monday, at 10 a.m. at All Saints Parish, Keokuk, with Father Lathrop officiating.

He was born on July 10, 1933 to Joseph Hemann and Rosetta Mauer Hemann of McIntyre, Iowa. He attended school in Meyer, Iowa. DeVere served in the U.S. Army from February 1954 to February 1957. He married Margaret Murray on June 30, 1962, in Washington, D.C.

DeVere and Margaret had six children: Kathy (Lowell) Wigant, Cindy Shank, Theresa (Paul) Sestito, Peggy (Charles) Brooke, Steve (Theresa) Hemann and Robert (Dana) Hemann. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, a sister, Mary Margaret (Gary) Tebben, sister-in-law Shirley Hemann, and several cousins.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, daughter, Mary Hemann, brother, Charles, two sisters and his parents.

DeVere managed hog farms for almost 30 years, the last being Jerry Grauf’s, Elvaston, Illinois, prior to his retirement. He also worked for Cargill.

He was a member of All Saints Parish, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Knight, former Grand Knight and District Director.

Before DeVere’s health declined, he loved to spend time with his family, play cribbage and watch westerns.

Memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice or to Keokuk Catholic Schools.
