Wayne Emmett Shumate – July 8, 1920 – June 28, 2009

Wayne E. Shumate, 88

Wayne E. Shumate, 88, of Austin, died at Grand Meadow Healthcare Center on June 28, 2009.

He was the youngest of nine children born July 8, 1920 to John and Estella (Donner) Shumate in Osakis, Minn. Wayne served in World War II where he was stationed in Alaska.

He married Betty B. Meyers on Jan. 31, 1948 in Austin where they made their home. A Hormel Foods employee for over 40 years, Wayne belonged to Fellowship United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, Austin; daughter, Bonnie Lea, Oakdale; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Austin with Pastor Dennis Tamke officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment is at Osage, Cemetery, Osage, Iowa with military honors by American Legion Post 91. Worlein Funeral Home in Austin is in charge of arrangements.
