Rockford, Iowa - Avis Francis Wood, age 84, of Rockford, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1921 317th St., south of Osage, with Pastor Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Avis was born Dec. 28, 1927, near Osage, the daughter of John and Esther (Brandt) Gunsallus. She was baptized on Jan. 30, 1928, at Toeterville Lutheran Church and was also confirmed there. Avis graduated from Osage High School on May 23, 1947.
She married Russel Wood on June 4, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Avis spent her whole life as a homemaker while Russel worked as a carpenter for a Mason City company most of his life. She was a very active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, south of Osage.
Her greatest love was her family. Avis was a very giving person and enjoyed doing whatever she could for them. She loved cooking, gardening and sewing and greatly enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their families.
Avis is survived by her children, Bruce (Barb) Wood of Rockford, Eugene (Julie) Wood of Mason City, Rose (Ron) Hejna of Garner, John (special friend, Vickie) Wood of Rudd, Lesa Eckert of Garner, Arlyn (Shelly) Wood of Rudd; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Merlin (Dorothy) Gunsallus of McIntire; and a sister, Marlys (Bob) Starry of McIntire.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russel, in 1996; her granddaughter, Brigett Wirtjes; and an infant brother, Orvis Gunsallus.
