Funeral services for Herman Smesrud, 88, who died July 24, 1969 at St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, were held July 28 at First Lutheran church with the Rev. D. Comnick officiating.
Herman Edwin Smesrud was born January 2, 1881 at Daleyville, Wis. He was the son of Thore and Julia (Ranum) Smesrud and spent his childhood in Wisconsin, later moving to Joice. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
In March, 1904 he married Thea Amundson and they farmed south of Joice for 12 years. They moved to St. Ansgar in 1916 and Mr. Smesrud was in the garage business for many years. Later he was a Champlin Oil dealer until his retirement.
After the death of his wife in 1952 he went to live with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Tesch. The winters were spent with his son Vernon in Arkansas and with his daughter, Marie in Florida.
Survivors include a son, Vernon, Springdale, Ark.; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Marie) Nyman of Key Largo, Fla.; Mrs. Julius (Thelma) Tesch, Mason City; a granddaughter, Carol Nyman of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Clara Hanson, Blanchardville, Wis.; and a brother, Walter Smesrud, Mankato, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, his wife, Thea, two sisters and two brothers.
Burial was in the First Lutheran church cemetery, St. Ansgar, Iowa.
