DEATH OF DOCTOR GABLE
Regarding the recent death of Dr. W.H.H. Gable who was born in Mifflinburg, removed to the West, and was a reader of the TELEGRAPH for fifty years, we clip the following from the Osage, Iowa News of August 20th
Dr. W.H.H. Gable, died Friday at the home of his daughter in Boise, Idaho. His body was brought here and after funeral services in the cemetery chapel, in charge of the local Masonic lodge, was laid to rest in the Osage Cemetery. Dr. Gable was an Osage pioneer who by his many acts of public service had won a warm place in the hearts of the people of Mitchell county and his death will be mourned by many.
The following outline of his life was read at his funeral: Dr. William Henry Gable was born in Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, August 1, 1841, and passed away in Boise, Idaho, August 14, 1914. In his native state he received his literary training and grew to young manhood. Later he went to the state of Michigan, where he was united in marriage to Sarah Arnold. To this union were born three children, two sons passed away in infancy.
In early life he and his wife came to Iowa and settled in Bremer County and later moved to Osage. He entered Rush Medical College and graduated with the class of 1879. He at once took up the practice of medicine in Osage and with the exception of a few years spent in travel, was entirely engaged in his chosen work until his health would no longer permit.
He was a surgeon in military service for eleven years— for six years he was surgeon for the 2nd. Brigade. He was military medical director of the Columbian Exposition, examiner for the U.S. pension department for years, state physician for the Order of Maccabees four years and held positions of trust and responsibility in the line of his profession.
For years he was one of the leading citizens of Osage. Interesting himself in all those movements which make for the betterment of the community and the uplift of mankind. At various times in our city he held public office of trust and honor, viz: president of the school board, president of medical society, secretary of the fair association, for fifteen years was a member of city council, was a member of the board of trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was also a member of several orders in Masonry, the Woodman.
Early in life he joined the Lutheran Church and upon coming to Osage united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, remaining a member until passing on to the Church Triumphant.
His great ambition was to bring out the best there was in a community and he ever worked to do all in his power to promote the best interest and highest standards of living. He was a lover of the pure, upright and noble in life. Even thru illness he fought a brave battle. His keenness of intellect to the very last was a marvel to nurses and physicians.
Five years ago last January he suffered a nervous breakdown and never completely recovered. In the fall of 1909, he went to Boise, Idaho, with his daughter, hoping that a change of climate would restore his health, but while there were times when he was comfortable, health never returned. He returned twice to renew friendships with friends and dear ones.
A year ago last June he ceased from all active work, and since then his life has been one of suffering. Five weeks ago when complications set in, he gave up the hope of recovery and prayed that the release might come quickly.
He expressed a complete readiness to go and his last words were a prayer for his only child. Dr. Gable is survived by his daughter, Mrs. D.E. Brink of Boise, Idaho, who with her daughter and little son accompanied the body here: by his brother C. Gable of Mankato, Minnesota and his two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Catherman of Plymouth, Iowa. and Miss Sara of Osage.
