VINCENT BENSON DIES AT
HOME AT ROCKFORD, IOWA

Vin Benson, 40, was found dead in his bed Sunday night [Jan. 1, 1950] at his home at Rockford by his wife when she returned home from their cafe. Vin had been ill for a week with flu, which was aggravated by a nervous, run-down condition, and his doctor had given him the sleeping pills to allow him to get some rest.

The body was brought to the Loper Funeral Home in Riceville that afternoon by L. R. Bradley where it remained until the time of the funeral service Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Immaculate Conception Church. The mass was read by the Rev. Father J. P. McConnell and the sermon delivered by the Rev. Father C. J. Lawler, Vin's pastor at Rockford. Interment was made in Calvary Cemetery.

Vincent Milburn Benson, always known as "Vin", was born October 5, 1910, at Riceville, Iowa, the son of John and Anna Seavy Benson. He spent his childhood and youth at Riceville, attending the local schools and was graduated with the class of 1928.

He was married October 5, 1937, to Marian Overlie of Bricelyn, Minnesota. They became parents of one child, a daughter, Nancy.

After serving as assistant buttermaker at the Riceville Creamery for some years he accepted a position as buttermaker at the Renwick creamery in 1945; later held similar positions at Kensett and Colwell.

In October of 1949 he purchased the Rockford Cafe and moved to Rockford where he operated the business until his death.

Vin was a man of winning personality and was liked by the whole community. He leaves not only his family but innumerable friends who regret his passing.

He is survived by his wife and daughter, Nancy; his father, Jack Benson; sisters and brothers as follows: Mrs. Stanley Hubbard (Libbby), Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Herman Lammers, (Anna May), Elma; Mrs. Loyd Jennison, (Margaret), Riceville; John Benson, Riverton, Wyoming; Jim Benson, Waterloo; Mrs. David Larson (Vera), Riceville; Mrs. Prosper Jeffries, (Mary Irene), Osage.

His mother died in 1937. With the exception of Mrs. Hubbard all the family was present at the last rites. He is also survived by several uncles and aunts in Riceville.

Pallbearers were: Carl Kubicek, Rudy Doerr, Ray Warburton, Loyd Richmond, Elbert Hendricks, and Roy Carpenter.
