Maxine Elizabeth Hartwig was born to William Henry and Maude May (Wells) Pangburn on the family farm four and a half miles northwest of Kensett, Iowa, on April 7, 1921. She was baptized in the Kensett United Methodist Church and continued her membership there for 78 years. Maxine attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated in 1938 from Kensett High School at age 17. At the age of 18, she entered the field of nursing. Mercy Hospital of Mason City was affiliated with St. Joseph Mercy College of Nursing at Sioux City, Iowa, where she spent her first year, the other two in Mason City. Maxine received her registered nurse degree in 1942.

She was united in marriage to Paul L. Hartwig on February 14, 1945, at the Kensett United Methodist Church. Their son, Robert P. Hartwig, was born to the couple. After her mother died in 1947, she and her son lived with her father on his farm until 1954 when the two moved to Osage.

She began working at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital September 1, 1954, and was employed there for over 26 years. Every year, she and her son took a vacation, driving in all of the states except Hawaii. Maxine loved to sing and whistle. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming, bowling, golfing, watching football and enjoyed working out of doors. Most of all, she enjoyed the years traveling, camping, hiking and climbing along with her son, Bob. She loved all of nature. In 1986, her first granddaughter arrived and Maxine took every opportunity to drive to Boone and visit her family. In time, another girl and two boys came along to fulfill her life. Maxine was a life time member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service through the Kensett Methodist Church, a life time member of the Royal Neighbors of America, a life time member of the Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary, a 4-H club member in the 1930’s, a V.F.W. Auxiliary Member, and a Red Cross Volunteer for the blood bank year ago. Maxine wanted to have her old “sewer cat” remembered. Old “Tom” had been her steadfast companion for years, after she saw him come up out of the sewer back in the early 1980’s.

Maxine is survived by her son, Robert Hartwig of Nevada; four grandchildren, Janelle Hartwig of Des Moines, Chelsea Hartwig of Ames, Landon Hartwig of St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Mason Hartwig of Boone; her sister, Virginia Scott of Marshalltown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Aleatha Hooven and Gladys Bringe; and a brother, Milo Pangburn, Sr.
