Bernard K. Sprung, former vice president and counsel of The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, died Friday in the Manhasset Medical Center. He was 62 years old and lived at 121 Ryder Road, Manhasset, New York.
Mr. Sprung was born on June 3, 1911 in Riceville, Iowa, the son of Chris and Minnie Sprung. He graduated from the Riceville High School, from Grinnell College in 1931 and the Fordham Law School in 1935, prior to his retirement in 1972, he headed the insurance relations division of Equitable's law department, and since his retirement has served as a consultant. At the time of his death, he was a member of the board of directors of Gotham Life Insurance Company of New York. His mother, Minnie Klein Sprung, passed away a few years ago.
A specialist in insurance legislative and regulatory matters, Mr. Sprung served on a number of industry-wide legal commitees. He was the author of treatises on the regulation of insurance advertising and life insurance advertising and life insurance insolvency fund legislation.
His professional memberships included the American, New York State and Nassau County Bar Asssociations, the legal section of the American Life Convention and the Association of Life Insurance Counsel, which he served as secretary-treasurer from 1963 to 1971. He was also a director and secretary of the New York Life Insurance Guaranty Corporation and a member of the executive committee of the insurance section of the New York Board of Trade.
Mr. Sprung was a member of the Congregational Church of Manhasset and the Huntington Crescent Club.
Surviving are his widow, the former Elaine Jones, a son, Christopher of Homewood, Illinois, a daughter, Mrs. Charles Doughty, III of Port Washington, and three grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday at 8 p.m. at Fairchild Sons, 1570 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset.
