Velva Margaret McIntire was born in McIntire, Iowa on January 22, 1899. She was the daughter of Charlotte Tomlinson McIntire and John Chamberlain Benjamin McIntire. Also a son was born to this union on April 28, 1897 and died on December 12, 1900.
Velva was named after the town of Velva, North Dakota. Her father liked this name and wanted it for his daughter's name.
She went to school in McIntire and at the age of seven years her hearing began to be a handicap to her and in 1918 she was very ill with the flu and quit school which she soon regreted having done.
In 1921 she attended Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage and was given a piano teachers certificate. Velva returned to high school in McIntire Independent School and in 1935 she graduated with the Senior Class, with the Junior-Senior banquet being held in her home. Velva attended MacCalester College in St. Paul were she majored in music. Through the years she had quite a music class of young piano students at different times.
Her father died on November 9, 1947, so Velva and her mother continued to make a home for a cousin Harry Eastman whom had been living with the McIntires for many years.
Velva's mother had a stroke and was partially paralyzed. Velva unselfishly and patiently took care of her for 12 years. She died on April 7, 1952.
As years went by Velva continued to live in McIntire and make a home for her cousin Harry until she went in the Osage Nursing Home to make her home. On May 1, 1978 she submitted to major surgery in the Osage Memorial Hospital from which she did not fully recover. Velva died on June 9, 1978 in the Osage Nursing Home at the age of 79 years 4 months and 17 days. She leaves in passing, many cousins, among them; Darlene Rader and Nels Couglan both of Wapheton, North Dakota and Gladys Hansen of Seattle, Washington and a host of friends.
