Death of Henry Hill
Liberty lost one of her early settlers and oldest residents last Saturday morning in the passing away of Henry Hill. Mr. Hill was born in Vermont on the 20th day of September 1811, and died in Mitchell county, Iowa, June 29, 1895, aged 83 years, 9 months and 9 days. At the age of two years his parents moved to De Peyster,St. Lawrence county, New York, where he lived for over half a centry.
In 1842 he was married to Miss Laura Allen, who left him one child, a son now living in Chicago. In 1848 he was united in marriage with Miss Sophia Petrie, who has travelled with him forty-seven years and still survives. To them were born four boys and two girls, all of whom are now living near the old homestead except S. W. who lives in Osage.
The family consists of George D.; Silas W.; Mrs. Sarah Hockens, Richard, Mrs. Mary Barker, and A. L. with twenty-three grandchildren. In 1865, Mr. Hill came to the west to find a place where he could secure more land for his growing family. The next year he came again and purchased the old Rolfe farm on the Little Cedar.
In 1867 he brought his family and settled out there although there was no house between there and Osage except Baliff's and that was not on the road. The nearest railroads were at Cresco and Cedar Falls. The deceased started poor, like most others, but gained a competence, at one time owning 900 acres in Liberty. He never had a doctor for himself except in case of accident.
He was an active, hardworking man as a carpenter and farmer. In politics he was a most ardent republican and when the boys, as they sometimes did purposely, talked in favor of the democratic party, he was at once aroused, and read them a good lecture. Mr. Hill was poorly for about ten weeks and passed away finally like a tired child going to sleep. The funeral service were held in the M. E. church at Wheeler, Sunday afternoon by Rev. E. J. Lookwood of this city in the presence of a large audience. Over sixty teams followed the reamins to the cemetery in that neighborhood, where they were deposited to await the coming of the resurection.
