HENRY UTESCH --April 7, 1856 - November 3, 1948

Henry Frederik Utesch, Sr., was born April 7, 1856, near Luebeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. At the age of 10 he became an orphan when his mother died; his father having passed away previously. As a youth he entered the German army, serving four years . He then learned the shoemaker trade.

March 22, 1884, he married Miss Anna Christine Utesch. This union was blessed with 13 children, six of whom preceded him in death.

He came to America in 1887, and settled near Yutan, Nebraska. There he and his family lived on various farms for a period of 22 years. A further five years he lived in Texas and eight years in Missouri. The remaining 30 years he lived in the vicinity of Riceville.

Due to the infirmities of old age, he passed away at 6 o'clock last Wednesday evening, November 3. He has thus attained the age of 90 years, six months, and 16 days.

In infancy, Mr. Utesch was baptized in the Lutheran faith and at the age of 14 renewed his baptismal vow in the rite of confirmation. While residing in this vicinity he was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Riceville, until his death.

Funeral service was held Saturday afternoon, November 6, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Walter Schroeder. After a short service in the Conway Funeral Home, at Elma, funeral service was continued at 3 o'clock in St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Riceville. Interment was made in St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Anna, two sons, Henry, Waterloo, and Fred Jr., Riceville, five daughters: Mary, Mrs. J. F. Harris, Elma; Louise, Mrs. Chris Lubbert, Riceville; Alvina, Mrs. Bernard Ball, Wilton Junction; Ruth, Mrs. Frank Funte, Elma, and Frieda, Elma; 28 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
