Mrs. W. L. Laughlin
Once again we must say out goodbye to a friend, Mary Tyrrell Laughlin, whose passing from this life on August 30, leaves a void in the hearts of her family and friends, which can never be filled. Words seem futile in describing a life such as hers whose kindliness and understanding reached us all.
Mary Tyrrell was born on July 16, 1861, at Riceville, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. After attending public and private schools she taught in the rural schools of Mitchell county a number of years.
On July 16, 1884, she was united in marriage to Williard L. Laughlin, then for five years lived on a homestead in South Dakota. After this they returned to Mitchell county, where they lived until ten years ago, whent he family moved to Charles City. There, two years ago, July 16, 1934, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Laughlin is survived by her husband, Williard Laughlin, and five children, Floyd, of Osage, Mrs. Elmer Walter, of LaFayette, Indiana; Miss Merle, school nurse, Charles City; Mrs. Ward Kenneth, of Charles City. Also Gage, of Victoria, Texas, and three sisters survive, Mrs. Ella Neville, Mrs. Grant Foster, and Mrs. Geo. Gooder, all of Riceville, all of whom were present at the final rites.
A life-long member of the Methodist Church, exemplified in her every day life, the true meaning of Christianity, the breadth and depth of real womanhood, and real motherhood. It is the memory of that life which is the solace of her people as they lay her to rest in Riceville cemetery among her own kinsfolk.
