MICHAEL TONN, WELL
KNOWN RICEVILLEITE
ENDED LIFE SUNDAY

The body of Michael Tonn, a well-known Riceville man, was found hanging from the limb of a tree in a grove a quarter-mile south of there Monday. Indications were that Mr. Tonn had committed suicide by hanging the day before, as he had been missing from his home that length of time.

Mr. Tonn had placed a halter rope around his neck and let himself down from the limb, but death did not result immediately, as there was mute evidence that he had realized the consequences of his act and tried to get back on the limb, as one leg and arm were wrapped around it. The rope, however, had caused strangulation during his efforts.

Mr. Tonn had been in poor health for the past two years, and had made application for treatment at the hospital at Iowa City. Doctors, however, believed his trouble to be more mental than physical, and as his condition was not at all seious he was placed on the waiting list.

Mr. Tonn was of Bohemian nationality; had lived in Riceville for about 30 years, operating a dray line for a long time. In recent years, hoever, he had been working at a variety of day labor.

Surviving are his wife and their eight children: Leo, Antone, Edward, Olga, Albert, Emil, Mrs. Sam Wilner, all of Riceville, and Mrs. Bertha Wagner of Hollandale, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held at the Riceville Catholic church, and burial was made in the cemetery there.

Calvary Catholic Cemetery listing on IaGenWeb shows:

Tonn, Mike F. 1874 -- 1936

NOTE: There was some confusion for a while. The cemetery listing on IaGenWeb said he died in 1935, but the newspaper is definitely a 1936 issue.
