Ira Hawkins was born February 25, 1851, in Illinois and died April 8, 1911 of Bright's disease at the home of his son in Riceville, Iowa.
He was married to Sarah A. Betts, September 12, 1872.
Four children were born to them, two of whom with their mother survive to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and father, two children have preceded him to a better land. Those who remain are Mrs. Fanny Thompson of Montana and Alonzo of Riceville.
He also leaves four brothers, William of Nebraska, Chester and Joe of Wisconsin and George of Little Cedar, Iowa.
The funeral services were held in the Baptist church of which he was a member, on Tuesday, April 11th 1911, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Thos. McElroy. The church was draped and decorated in a very tasty manner for the occasion. The interment was in the Wayne Cemetery.
Mr. Hawkins moved here from Little Cedar about four years ago, buying a home in the southeast part of town. About a year ago his health began to fail and he was obliged to give up work, and five months ago he went to the home of his son that he might help care for him. All that skill or loving hands could not save him. He suffered much pain the last six weeks and death came as a great relief.
