OLSEN, Olaf 1873-1890

OLSEN

The silent messenger of Death has again invaded our midst and taken from us a young man universally respected by one and all. On Thursday afternoon of last week it was reported on our streets that Olaf Olsen, a son of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Olsen, was seriously ill, but as announcements of sicknesss are so prone to being exaggerated, many refused to believe that the malady from which he was suffering would run to a fatal termination. Naturally the announcement of his death the following morning caused a feeling of sadness throughout the town and called forth the heartfelt sympathies of our people for the bereaved parents, brothers, sisters and other relatives. Olaf Olsen was a victim of the prevailing malady of last winter, the grippe, since which time he has not been in very good health. He was taken ill one week ago today with a sore throat, but the attending physician did not express any fears for his safety. On Thursday he grew worse rapidly and died on Friday morning in great agony from what was pronounced diphtheria-croup. Deceased was 17 years, 7 months and 9 days of age: was born in Janesville, Wis., and came to St. Ansgar with his parents when about three years of age. The family has the sympathies of all Christian people in their sad affliction. How true it is that "the old must die and the young often do."

Item #2

Resolutions of respect passed by the St. Ansgar Cornet band on the death of Olaf Olsen who died October 31, 1890:

Whereas, The unsparing hand of Death has taken from our midst our faithful friend and member, Olaf Olsen, and believing that God in his All-wise Providence has called him from his labors to reward him for the manly deeds that has marked his earthly life, be it.

Resolved, That we truely lament his loss; that with sorrowing heart we realize that his voice is hushed to us forever. That, while with obedience we bow to the will of our All-wise Ruler, we may rejoice that we still have left the memory of his worth, and the influences that his purity of life, his honorable bearing, his unselfish nature, and generous ways diffused. That in his character those virtues were exemplified which we would wish to emulate. That in his death we lose a worthy friend, and member, society a noble character, and the world an honorable young man.

Resolved, That we, the St. Ansgar Cornet Band, tender our heart-felt sympathies and sincere condolence to the bereaved family.
