Charles Gerbig – July 1, 1861 – September 7, 1935
Charles Gerbig who was born at Beloit, Wisconsin, July 1, 1861, died Saturday, September 7, 1935, at 10:30 p.m. He fell asleep in Jesus, being on that day 74 years, 2 months and 6 days old.
At the age of three, he lost his mother, but later he was blessed with a second mother. Between these two there was the same affection and care as between a mother and son. His step-mother, Mrs. Hannah Gerbig, survives him, living with her daughter, in Duluth.
When he was twelve years old his father brought the family to Union Township to a farm on the state line. He was confirmed into the union church of which he was a faithful member to the last.
On June 18, 1885, he married Miss Mary Decker, and for ten years they lived on a farm in Minnesota. They then moved to Stacyville, where they have lived since, retiring 13 years ago. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this summer with old friends.
To this union were born two sons, Ed and John, and three daughters; Mrs. Ida Kinney; Mrs. Esther Foy; and Mrs. Una Stallman, of Fairfield, Iowa; and ten grandchildren and his wife mourn his passing. He was a loving husband and father.
He is survived by two brothers, Albert, in California; and Frank, in Canada; one sister; Mrs. Helen Fuess, of Hebolt; four half-brothers; Leonard, Stacyville; Fred, Brownsdale, Minnesota; Louis, in California; and Clarence, Webster, South Dakota; four half-sisters; Mrs. Matie Townsend of Oregon; Mrs. Celia Smith, here; Mrs. Laura Penney, Tacoma, Washington; Mrs. Annie Keldsen, Duluth, Minnesota.
Mr. Gerbig operated a hardware store here after having retired from farming. He was active in politics, church and community affairs. He served as counsel man and also on the Stacyville Public School Board.
He leaves, in this earthly scene, brethren of Christ, who await the day of resurrection when they shall be reunited in body with him. A great number of friends are saddened by the going away of a true neighbor and friend.
Mr. Gerbig has testified that his hope alone is through the merits of the all sufficient sacrifice of Christ. That being true, we have joy mingled with sorrow that comes when we face death, for we are confident that, having trusted in Christ, he is now with Him in glory.
