JOHN GLASSEL, OLD
MITCHELL RESIDENT
DIED SUDDENLYJohn Glassel was born April 15, 1843, in Bavaria, Germany. He was baptized in infancy, instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
At the age of four years he came to America, first to New York, and later removing with his parents to Rochester, N.Y. Then, a few years later he came west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At the last named place he was married to Julia Urbatch, and they came to Rock Creek, Mitchell County, Iowa. Mrs. Glassel, his wife, died soon after their arrival.
Later he was married to Mary Schoffel, who was a constant life companion.
The past 22 years of his life were spent in Mitchell, where he was a respected and looked-up-to citizen. He was actively engaged until he became afflicted with heawrt trouble, which was the cause of his death, on September 2, 1924. He had enjoyed his evening meal as usual, and walked to th ebusiness section of the village, but shortly after he returned home, passed away at 8 p.m., at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 17 days.
He is survived by his wife, and the following children: Mrs. Emma Trettin, Herman, Minn.; Edward Glassel, Grafton; Godfrey Glassel, Leslie, Michigan; Mrs. Alma Biedermann, Grafton; Charles Glassel, Leslie, Michigan; nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on the afternoon of September 5, 1924, at the home and interment made in the beautiful Mitchell cemetery. Rev. C. Landdeck conducted the last rites.
