Leva Gunild (Gunderson) DuShane -- October 21, 1880 – January 11, 1949

Osage, Iowa – Word came Tuesday to Mrs. Lewis Haberkorn, wife of Deputy Sheriff Lewis Haberkorn of the death Tuesday morning of her sister, Mrs. Jesse E. DuShane, 68, at her home at Los Angeles, California. Funeral is scheduled Friday at Los Angeles, with burial in the family lot beside her husband.
Nee Leva Gunild Gunderson, she was the daughter of Mitchell County pioneers Erik and Louise (Helgeson) Gunderson. She was born October 21, 1880, in Newburg Township, near St. Ansgar, Iowa.
She was baptized and confirmed by a Norwegian pioneer pastor, Rev. Johann Olson, in First Lutcheran Church at St. Ansgar, the original stone church that holds the distinction of being the first Lutheran church established west of the Mississippi.
She attended the local school and took advanced work in music, and was a music instructor until her marriage October 29, 1904, to Jesse E DuShane. The couple established their first home near St. Ansgar, leaving in 14 years for Los Angeles, California.
In March 1945, Mrs. DuShane suffered a paralytic stroke, and that same month her husband died suddenly of a heart attack. She partially recovered from the effects of the paralysis, but suffered another attack in September, 1947, which left her entirely helpless.
She leaves an only son, Earl; two grandchildren, Berkeley, California; four sisters; Mrs. E. A. Back, Fergus Falls, Minn.; Mrs. Alden Scott Boyer, Chicago; Mrs. Lewis Haberkorn, Osage; Mrs. Josephine Schmidt, Minneapolis; and two brothers; Gustav, St. Ansgar; Emil Ray, N. D.; preceding her also were two brothers; John and Melvin, an infant son and two sisters; Mrs. Laura Bendickson and Lorene Gunderson.

The couple had 2 children: Infant Gunderson DuShane (born November 5, 1905, died December 27, 1905 both at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa) and Earl Duane DuShane (born October 17, 1913 at Charles City, Floyd, Iowa, died February 3, 2013 Nevada).
