OSAGE, IOWA – Funeral services were held Sunday at Mason City and at Osage for Edward James Jeffries, 85, who died Friday at his home at Mason City.
Funeral was in charge of the Rev. Stiles Lessly, Congregational pastor.
Burial was in the Osage Cemetery.

Edward James Jeffries, son of Jesse and Ellen Crittle Jeffries, was born on October 23, 1857, at Janesville, Wisconsin. He was the third in a family of 11 children. He died at his home in Mason City on August 13, 1943, after a brief illness.
At the age of seven he came with his parents to Iowa. They settled on a farm eight miles west of Osage, where he grew up to young manhood. He attended the Rock Creek school in the community.
On January 15, 1878, he was married to Anna Mae Cobeen. They established their home on a farm 10 miles west and one and three quarters miles south of Osage. There they lived for 43 years, retiring in 1921, and moving to Mason City.
Eight children were born to this union, three of whom survive him.
In his youth he united with the Osage Universalist church and with his family would drive the 12 miles from their home into Osage and return.
He belonged to that rugged type of pioneer to whom much credit is due for settling this portion of the Middle West. He was a large man physically, labored hard during his active years, and achieved considerable success as a farmer. By the time he retired he owned a farm of over 350 acres. He had a sense of independence until the time of his death, and was highly respected as a man of integrity.
July 13, 1933, his wife passed away. Since that time his daughter, Mrs. Ray Downing, has lived with him and cared for him. In recent years he has spent several winters in California with his daughter, Mrs. W. A. Hockett
Besides his wife, five of his children preceded him in death,including two sons who died in infancy; Nellie at the age of 3, Gladys, at the age of 1; and Claud LeRoy, who died 8 years ago at the age of 41.
His three daughters who survive him are: Mrs. W.A. Hockett, of Linwood, California, Mrs. Ray Downing of Mason City, and Mrs. I.R. Bell, of Bell, California. Besides these there are nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; also one sister, Mrs. Nellie Stokes of Cedar Falls, survive him.
Funeral services were held last Sunday at 10 a.m. at the home in mason City, at 2:00 p.m. at the Champion funeral home in Osage and with burial in the Osage Cemetery. Rev. Stiles Lessly, pastor of the Osage Congregational church conducted the services.
