Nellie Boyd Lee was born on March 21, 1879, and passed away in January 1981.
She was the daughter of William and Sarah Boyd, and was born on a farm near Cedar Iowa. She had one brother and three sisters. She graduated from high school at Kirksville. There were three girls in her graduating class, and she was the Valedictorian.
At a box social, as a young girl, she met Nelson Lee, and as she recalled later, "I liked him right away." They were married on June 30, 1900, and farmed near Kirksville. She had a large flock of chickens and a big garden.
Nellie and Nelson had two daughters, Arlene, who died at birth, and Dorothy, who passed away in 1955 at the age of 50; and one son, Bert, of Saratoga, Iowa.
Nellie has never cared much for television, but a radio had always been her constant companion. Especially at election time, she would follow the newscasts and could tell someone all about the candidates. She emphatically states that she has always been a Republican.
Nellie joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at an early age. She was a faithful member and taught Sunday School, as well as singing in the choir for many years.
Nellie broke her hip in 1959, and lived in a rest home in Oskaloosa before coming to the Riceville Community rest Home on October 19, 1967, to be closer to her son.
She celebrated her 100th birthday in 1979 with a party at the rest home.
