HUNTING TRAGEDY NEAR STACYVILLE SUNDAY MORNING.

Carl J. Thome, Fine Young Man, Killed by Accidental Discharge of Gun.

It is with deep regret that we are obliged to chronicle the sad news of the sudden death of Carl J. Thome who was accidentally killed last Sunday at about 11:30 by the accidental discharge of a shotgun. Carl, in company with his brothers and a neighbor boy were about to go hunting when the sad deed took place at the John Thome, Jr. farm place five miles east of Stacyville. The boys had placed their guns in an auto and as Carl was entering the car a gun discharged and the load of shot entered his chest just above the heart, death being instantaneous. Just how it occurred is not known.

Shortly after the accident the body was removed to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Thome, Sr., at Meyer.

The deceased was born on a farm east of Stacyville, January 29, 1904, and was reared to young manhood in that vicinity and was one of the finest young men in the Meyer parish. At the time of death his age was 20 years, 10 months and 8 days. His sudden demise was a great shock not only to his parents and relatives, but also to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Just a week ago last Sunday he was one of the large class of young men who were honored with membership in St. Mary’s Court, No. 944, Catholic Order of Foresters.

His sudden death came as a sever blow to his brother members. Every member who possibly could get away was present at the last sad rites. He was a member of the young men’s society of the Meyer parish and this society was largely represented at the funeral.

The funeral took place yesterday morning at 9:30 from the family home. Services were conducted by Rev. Fr. C.F. Jungermann in Sacred Heart church at Meyer, after which the remains were laid to rest in the parish cemetery. He is mourned by many and to all these we extend sincere sympathy in their sorrow.

HUNTING TRAGEDY NEAR STACYVILLE SUNDAY MORNING.

Carl J. Thome, Fine Young Man, Killed by Accidental Discharge of Gun. CHARGE ENTERED NEAR HEART. Death was Instantaneous-Tragedy Occurred at Home of Brother – Was Placing Gun in Car Preparatory to Starting Home – Burial at Meyer Yesterday Morning.

Another hunting tragedy occurred in Mitchell county last Sunday, when the accidental discharge of a shotgun took the life of Carl Thome, son of John Thome Sr. [and Sarah nee Steiger] of Meyer. Carl, who had made his home with his brother Frank, who resides about two miles east of Stacyville, had been out hunting with him and Paul Theobald.

They had stopped at the home of another brother, John Jr., two miles east of Frank’s and were starting back to Frank’s home when the tragedy occurred. Carl was putting the gun in the car and the charge of shot entered his chest just above the heart, death being instantaneous. Just how it occurred is not known.

The deceased was one of the fine young men of that community and was about 21 years of age. His sudden death was great shock not only to his relatives, but also to a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Such accidents as this should cause other hunters to be more careful when handling a gun, as they usually happen at a thoughtless moment.

Funeral services were held at the Catholic church at Meyer yesterday morning, conducted by the pastor, Fr. Jungermann, after which the remains were interred in the cemetery near the church. Those struck by this sudden bereavement have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in their grief.
