Edward Brenneisen 1845-1914
Edward Brenneisen was the 3rd of 8 children born to Johan Jakob & Anna Maria (Buehler) Brenneisen, in Germany.
Johan and Anna arrived in New York on May 31, 1867, having set sail from Hamburg, Germany, aboard the ship Bavaria, with 6 of their 8 children. Johan's brother, Johan Frederick Brenneisen, sailed over with them.
On October 17, 1873, Edward Brenneisen wed Dorothea Meyer, daughter of Carsten Heinrich Friedrich Meyer & Dorothea (Ritz) Meyer.
This same day, Edward's sister, Elizabeth Brenneisen, wed Dorothea's brother, Conrad Meyer! I would assume this was a double wedding, although I have no documentation of that. From Dorothea's obituary, it appears they met and married in Chicago, and I know the Meyer's were in Chicago for several years after coming to America from Germany before removing to Iowa.
According to the 1910 Census for Edward & Dorothea in Jenkins Twp , Riceville, Iowa, Dorothea had born 7 children with only five living. I know the names of 6 and assume that one died in infancy. Another daughter, Lizzie, died at 1 yr. and 4 mos. of age. The other children were: Katherine (Mrs. Frank Young), Heinrich Johann Ernst "Henry", Karl Friedrich /Charles Fred, Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. Ed Funte) and August John Jacob Brenneisen.
Copied from the obituary of Edward Brenneisen:
Edward Brenneisen was born in Haningen, Germany, Oct. 27, 1845. He emigrated to this country in 1867, settling in Benton County, Iowa. In 1873 he was united in marriage with Dorothea Meier. Seven years after, the family moved to a farm eight miles south of Riceville, which he operated until four years ago, when he retired, coming to Riceville.
About six weeks ago he was attacked by a complication of ailments, which culminated in his death last Saturday evening.
He leaves a broken-hearted widow, two sons and one daughter. The community shares the deep grief of Mrs. Brenneisen, as she suffered a similar bereavement last year when a daughter died. The age of Mr. Brenneisen was 68 years, 9 months and 25 days.
The funeral took place Monday afternoon, the body being laid at rest in Riverside Cemetery, Rev. K. Rudolph officiating.
