GILBERT CARLSON AND MILLIE JOHNSON CARLSON

Gilbert Oliver Carlson was born on May 25, 1888, son of Gustave and Oline (Christianson) Carlson, and died April 2, 1958. Burial was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona, Iowa.

Gilbert and brothers, Edwin and Rudolph were in the First World War. Gilbert was in Company K, 325 Infantry, stationed in France. His main job was carrying the wounded from the front lines on the stretcher. Gilbert stated that one time a stretcher was shot right out of their hands.

He married Millie Johnson, daughter of Eberhart and Alette Johnson in a double wedding with his brother Rudolph who married Dora Berg, daughter of Gunder and Mina Berg on August 31, 1922 at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Lyle by Reverend A. Elmer Moe. Millie and Dora were cousins.

Gilbert and Millie made their home at the Eberhart Johnson farm. Gilbert started to haul cream, first by horses and then by truck. Sometimes in the winter, he had to break a track for the farmers or walk up the driveway to get the cans of cream.

Gilbert and Millie had one child, Mavis Gloria, on February 7, 1939. They did have another daughter that was carried to full term but was stillborn, August 22, 1926.

After Eberhard died, they bought a farm about one and three fourths mile east. They were both active in church. Gilbert was a janitor in the church for a number of years. One Sunday he walked to Mona to get the furnace started for Sunday service. Heavy snow made it impossible to get through with a car. Millie taught Sunday School and held various offices in the Ladies Aid. Gilbert was also on the Mona School Board and Millie was active in the Mothers Club. Gilbert also hauled livestock and picked up scrap lumber at Hormels in Austin until his death. Millie continued to live on the farm. Mavis and her husband wayne Hanson, made their home with her.

Gilbert had seven brothers and sisters: Charley, (Gundi Johnson), Minnie, (Nils Anderson) Emma, (died at 17 in 1902) Edwin, (Eva Christianson), Godfred, (Annie Meheus) Rudolph, (Dora Berg) and Raymond, (Verdie Klusmeier)
