BURIAL IN RIVERSIDE CEM., RICEVILLE

INEZ MAE SCHMIDT (1925-2009)

Inez Mae Schmidt, 84, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center.

Inez was born March 26, 1925, in Riceville Iowa, the daughter of Galen Glee and Mary Ellen (McKinney) Graves. She married Wesley I. Schmidt on Aug. 1, 1947, and they had four children: Carol (Paul) Koening of Hinckley Kay (William) Wallis of Mishawaka, Ind., Colleen (Gary) Hueber of Kenosha, Wis., and Kevin (Melissa) Schmidt of Zionsville, Ind., 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and growing.

Her lap was a favorite spot of all the grand-babies and there was nothing she enjoyed more than a young one on her lap. Inez's focus was service to others. Her family, her church, and her community were the foundations of her life and the people around her were served by her in many ways. The Country Store, Barb City Manor, First Baptist Church and Oak Crest Retirement Center were all places she helped in the recent past. She also dedicated many years in teaching the hearing impaired at Northern Illinois University. Her command of American Sign Language also made its way into church settings as she introduced children to signing and singing.

Inez and husband Wes were well traveled and visited in excess of 40 different countries and all 50 states in their 42 years of marriage. This love for seeing God's earth was also shared with her family with many fun adventures and vacations.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989, and by a sister, Ellen G. Graves who lived in the DeKalb and Rockford area following her retirement.

Inez's family would like to thank the staff at Oak Crest Retirement Center for their excellent care, as well as the expertise and assistance of DeKalb County Hospice. Inez's service to others was a shining example of how service can be lived each day.

Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 4, at First Baptist Church in DeKalb, with the Rev. Steve Boothe officiating. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 3, at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb. Interment will take place at the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, Iowa, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Inez's life with a contribution to one of the organizations where she gave from the heart with her time and talents: First Baptist Church, 349 S. Third St., DeKalb, IL 60115, or Oak Crest Retirement Center Good Samaritan Fund, 2944 Greenwood Acres Drive, DeKalb, IL 60115.
