Edgar Charles Janson 1919-2010

Edgar C. Janson, age 91, a longtime barber and businessman in Belmond, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond. The Rev. Troy Pflibsen officiated.

Burial was in the Osage Municipal Cemetery, Osage, Iowa. The family suggests those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Edgars name consider Trinity Lutheran Church-Belmond, Belmond V.F.W., the Belmond-Klemme Schools Foundations, or donors choice.

Edgar Charles Janson, the son of Hjelmaar and Anna (Enge) Janson, was born Feb. 18, 1919 on his familys farm in rural Clarion, Wright County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in rural Clarion near where he grew up. Edgar graduated from Clarion High School. He also attended barber college in Des Moines, Iowa.

Edgar served in the United States Army during World War II, spending times during his tenure in the Pacific Theatre, the Philipines, and various other islands during the war.

He had received numerous awards and commendations for his service to his country. Upon being honorably discharged following his service to his country, Edgar returned to civilian life where he farmed for a time. He eventually commenced his chosen profession as a barber for more than 50 years as a self-employed businessman.

Edgar was united in marriage to Grace Seter on Oct. 10, 1948, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage. The couple later moved to Belmond in the late 1950s. Their union was blessed with three sons, Charles, Mark, and Marshall. They also lost a daughter in infancy.

Edgar truly was a people person and very much enjoyed his life as a barber and the hundreds of customers he had the privilege of serving over the five decades of his career.

Following retirement from his barbershop he continued to provide his haircutting skills on a volunteer basis to his many friends and family members.

His family reflects back on Edgars memory and remembers him as a caring and loving father and a wonderful partner to his wife, Grace, for so many years. He cared for his family deeply. He looked forward to each and every opportunity that meant spending time in their presence and enjoyed going on family visits.

Edgar was a man who was very progressive in his thinking and appreciated being in the here and now of the world around him. He loved being an active participant in his community and had served in various roles with the Belmond Area Chamber of Commerce and the Belmond Jaycees during his business years. He loved to support his community and its many events and activities. He was a longtime and very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond and was a member of the V.F.W.

Edgar loved spending time having coffee with friends at Bloemkes Pharmacy in Belmond and enjoyed the special friends who he had during his many years at the Belmond Community Apartments.

Those who had the honor of crossing the path of Edgars life journey will remember him as a man who was easygoing, warm and friendly. They will miss his warm hello, the twinkle in his eyes and his warm smile. Many will also remember Edgar for the famous angel food cakes he provided for so many occasions over the years.

Edgar passed away on his 91st birthday and celebrated it in heaven with his loving wife, Grace.

His life will live on in the hearts and minds of his surviving children, Charles (Linda) Janson, Des Moines, Iowa, Mark (Lisa) Janson, Woodenville, Wash., and Marshall (Christine) Janson, Reno, Nev.; his four grandchildren, Christopher (Kelly) Janson, Des Moines, Erin (Seth) Kaiser, West Des Moines, Iowa, Katherine Janson, Reno, and Eric Janson, Reno; two sisters, Annelaine (Richie) Kane, Westgate, Iowa, and Evelyn Leffingwell, Chicago, Ill.; numerous neices, nephews and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter; his wife, Grace in November 1999; a sister, Marjorie Holtzbauer, and five brothers, Kenneth, Tolford, Eldon, Harley, and Joel.
Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond, was in charge of arrangements.
