Mrs. Elizabeth Johnston Chase was born in Buxton, Maine, May 15, 1825, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. H. White, in Spokane, Washington, November 3, 1909.
Her girlhood days were spent at her birthplace, and in Sacco, Maine, where on November 25th, 1845, she was united in marriage to Jacob L. Chase.
To this union were born seven children: Anna A., Alice M., Herbert, Lizzie M., Emma L., Burt M. and Edith. Two of these, Herbert and Lizzie M., died in infancy; and three of the others, Anna A. Rood, Emma L. Libby and Burt, who grew to maturity have passed over the border. The two surviving daughters are Alice M. White of Spokane and Edith Thomas of St. Paul.
Mr. and Mrs. Chase resided in Sacco until July 1856 when they came to Osage, then a typical pioneer town. Soon after their coming they built a house -- this being among the first houses built in Osage. For many years this was their home, but the time came when they wished for a better house and they sold the old home, building a new modern one in the second ward.
Here six years ago in December Mr. Chase was called to his eternal rest. Since his death Mrs. Chase has spent the winter months with her daughters in St. Paul and Spokane, returning each spring to spend the summer in her own home.
As was her custom, she came home last spring and seemed to be in her usual health until June, she became ill and it was thought best that she be taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas, in St. Paul. She remained there during the summer, but in the early fall, being very anxious to go to her daughter, Mrs. M. H. White in Spokane and thinking that the change would benefit her health she made the journey.
She suffered no ill effects except excessive weariness from which she seemed to entirely recover but in the course of four or five weeks she began to grow weaker and for the last ten days of her illness was confined to her bed.
She passed away Wednesday morning November 3, at half past 8 o'clock.
The body was brought back to Osage, Mrs. M.H. White coming with it, and the funeral services, conducted by Rev. H. Allen of the Congregational church were held Tuesday afternoon at the home. . . .
