Knud Knudsen Assorsen was born Sept 1841 at Aals, Norway to Assor Knudsen and Christie Knudsdatter Handegard, their only child. The family emigrated in 1852 to Rock County, Wisconsin. They moved to St Ansgar, Mitchell Co, IA. the next year, 1853, and claimed land north of town. This farm eventually totaled 160 acres and was one and one half miles north of St. Ansgar.
Knut married Bertha Fjeld Thompson on March 18, 1867 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa, probably at the First Lutheran Church. They had four daughters:
Caroline Christie (born December 1868, married Julius Olson, died March 4, 1942 both at St Ansgar, Iowa);
Louisa Anna (born about 1870/71, died before 1945);
Lisbeth Amelia (born and died 1876); and
Clara L (born 1878, died after 1945).
His first wife Bertha Fjeld Thompson was born 1847 Norway and died January 18, 1882 at St Ansgar, Iowa.
Knut married Kristina Olsdatter Rustad on June 22, 1883 at St Ansgar. They continued living on the farm and had two children:
Alfred Oliver Assorsen (born September 16, 1844, married Della Louise Wamben August 29, 1908, died November 13, 1967) and
Bertha Amalia (born August 12, 1890, died June 6, 1910).Kristina Olsdatter Rustad was born November 2, 1860 at Hurdalen, Akershus, Norway to Ole Kristofferson Rustad and Inge Lovise Gudbrandsdatter. She emigrated the fall of 1881 to Iowa. Died July 3, 1945.
Knud was one of the farmers in the St Ansgar area who investigated starting a sorghum factory about January of 1890. The group planned to raise sugar cane if someone would erect a mill. The plan never developed. Active in the community and the Norwegian Lutheran Church, he held offices of township trustee, assessor and clerk, was secretary of the school board of the independent district of Clyde since its organization and also one of its directors.
Knud Assorsen died 1920 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa (possibly on October 14, 1920). He is buried at the First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa.
