Mrs. Chris Olsen

Clara Andersen was born March 9, 1885, near Meltonville, Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa, to Hans Andersen and Gena Petersdatter. Clara can be found in the 1895 census at Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa. She was the fourth of 10 children, her parents emigrating to the area from Akershus, Norway.

In 1898, her parents and some of her siblings moved west to homestead land at Palermo, North Dakota. Clara and her oldest sister, Inga decided to not go with. Inga had married Sam Ring and they lived near St. Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa. Clara moved in with this couple and attended school at St. Ansgar besides helping with the household. She graduated from the St Ansgar Seminary (high school). She can be found living with Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ring in the 1900 and 1905 censuses at St Ansgar.

She married Kristian Olausen Olsen (more commonly known as Chris Olsen) on December 28, 1905 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Osage, Mitchell, Iowa. They had 5 children: Gladys Ivey Olsen (born Feb 7, 1907, married Elmer Ketelsen, died September 24, 2001); Glenn Carlton (born April 9, 1909, never married, died June 2, 1963); Geral Clair (born July 30, 1916, died August 10, 1916); Garmen Christian (born April 23, 1919, married, died September 10, 1978); and Gail Ione (born April 3, 1921, never married, died August 29, 2004).

After her marriage to Chris, they lived on rented farms around the St Ansgar area and raised their family. Some of her hobbies were sewing, drawing, painting, and writing poems. She also gardened and helped with the farm chores.
