OBITUARY-ODDEN

Carl Jon Odden was born October 2, 1864 on the Odden homstead in Cedar township seven miles southwest of Osage and died at the same place, April 14th, 1914, at the age of 49 years, 6 months, 12 days.

He was united in marriage to Johanne Dammen, June 10th 1892. To this union was born five children: Olga, Stella, Clara, Lloyd and Mable. His wife and all the children survive him to mourn the loss of a good husband and a dear father. Five brothers survive him: Olous and Edward of Effington, So. Dakota; Gabriel, Ole and Hans of Osage. His parents and one sister, Mrs. Winer, have gone before. Also two infant sister have gone before.

Carl has always remained on the old homestead. Here he was born, grew to manhood and raised his family. Here he prospered in his vocation as farmer and gained a competency.

He died rather suddenly. He had suffered from Bright's disease and rheumatism for a few days, but it was not regarded so very serious until a few hours before he passed beyond.

The funeral service was held at the home and in Rock Creek Lutheran church Friday aftenoon April 17th. He was baptized, comfirmed and married in the Rock Creek Lutheran congregation and from its church he was buried.

All his brothers were present at the funeral except one, Olous from Effington, could not come. He was laid to rest in the family lot in the Rock Creek Lutheran cemetery.

Carl Johan (Nelson) Odden was born October 2, 1864 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Lars Nelson Odden and Olea Olsdatter Teigen, the seventh of their nine children. Carl and his father used the surname Nelson until 1900 when Carl switched to the surname Odden.

Carl was confirmed on April 20, 1879 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

Found in the 1870 - 1885 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1870: Lewis Nelson 40, Olea Nelson 40, Olavis Nelson 14, Martha Nelson 18, Edward Nelson 11, Gabriel Nelson 9, Carl Nelson 5, Ole Nelson 3, Han D Nelson 2.

1880: Lars Nelson 58, Olien Nelson 55, Gabriel Nelson 19, Carl Nelson 17, Ole Nelson 12, Hans Nelson 10.

1885: Carl Nelson age 20.

Carl married Johanna Iversdatter Dammen on June 10, 1892 at Rock Creek Lutheran, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

The couple had 5 children who were all born and died in Mitchell County, Iowa:
Olga Mathilda (b April 8, 1894, d May 10, 1976);
Stella Isabel (b June 19, 1895, d April 19, 1982);
Clara Julia (b March 27, 1898, d March 29, 1920);
Lloyd I (b September 25, 1900, d August 28, 1988) and
Mabel Elnora (b June 24, 1902, d November 9, 1973).

Carl was a farmer. In 1911, Carl Odden lived on the family homestead in Section 16-97-17 in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa. Carl bought the farm from his father, Lars, in 1890. Carl then bought land across the road from his father's 120 acres. This 80 acre tract was in Floyd County.

1900: Carl J Odden 35, Johanna Odden 39, Olga M Odden 6, Stella I Odden 4, Clara J Odden 2, Iver Erikson 33.

1910: Carl N Odden 45, Johanna Odden 47, Olga Odden 16, Stella Odden 14, Clara Odden 12, Lloyd Odden 9, Mabel Odden 7.

Carl Johann Odden died April 14, 1914 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at Rock Creek Lutheran Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

He has a memorial at Find a Grave #54985337.
