94 AND 102 YEARS OF AGE
ONE OF THE EARLIST AND OLDEST SETTLERS OF MITCHELL COUNTY PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 94 AND IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIDOW WHO IS OF THE EXTRAORDINARY AGE OF 102Last Wednesday morning, Mrs. K. O. Lee, age is 102 years old and who resides about a mile northeast of Carpenter, awoke and got up to fix the fire. Soon her grandson, who resides close by, came in and she said to him that she could not get grandfather to wake up that morning. Alas, poor grandfather was dead, having passed away peacefully in his sleep sometime during the night before. Knud Olson Lee was born at Wang, Valders, Norway, September 9th, 1805. There he grew to manhood, and some time more than 70 years ago, (the exact year cannot now be ascertained,) he was united in marriage to Miss Guri J. Nustuen, who was seven years older than he, but who still survives him. They came to America in 1850 and resided in Wisconsin for about four years, the most of the time at Sun Prairie. In 1854 they came to Iowa and settled on the farm in Newburg township, near Carpenter which has since been their home. Six children were born to them but only one survives him, John, who resides close by the home of the old couple. He is now 67 years of age. There are also 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
However, the most remarkable thing is the very advanced age of Mrs. Lee. She was born in June or July of 1797, and is therefore nearly 102 years of age, certainly a most remarkable age and one seldom equaled in human annals. She still is healthy, although we are told that she is much like a child. Her hearing is nearly gone, although she has good sight yet.
The funeral of Mr. Lee was held at the Deer Creek church last Saturday, Rev. J. Olsen officiating.
