New Holstein: Mr. and Mrs. Michael Mauer spent the past week at Stacyville, Iowa where they attended the funeral services for the formers father, Anton Mauer, 92, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Hartnell, in that city.The deceased was born at Marytown on July 12, 1855, and went to Iowa, when he was some 20 years old, where he was married to Elizabeth Hackenmiller in 1879. The operated a farm for a number of years there. His wife passed away 42 years ago and three sons, Arthur, Matthew and Benedict also preceded him in death.
The survivors include five sons and four daughters: Joseph Mauer of Austin, Minn.; Michael of New Holstein; the Rev. J. F. Mauer of St. Mary’s church, Cascada, Iowa; the Rev. S. J. Mauer, pastor of St. Patrick’s church of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Frank of Stacyville; Mrs. Joseph Schmidt, Marble Rock, Iowa; Mrs. Fred Hartnell; Mrs. Albert Gerk; and Mrs. Edward Bartholmey, all of Stacyville; 37 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Services were conducted on Saturday morning with a requiem high mass at the church of Visitation in the presence of the archbishop, Henry P. Rohlmann and auxiliary bishop, Edward A Fitzgerald of Dubuque, Iowa. Officers of the mass were Rev. J. F Mauer, celebrant; the Rev. S.J. Mauer, deacon, and the Rev. M. Meyerhofer, a cousin, as subdeacon and the Rev. Louis E Ernadorff of Loras College as master of ceremonies. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. T. J. Rooney of Charles City, Iowa, dean of the district, delivered the sermon.
Burial was made in the family plot at Meyer, Iowa with the Rev. J. F. Mauer presiding.
