Clyde Mitchell Roehr 1903-1984

#1:

Clyde Mitchell Roehr was born July 16, 1903, the first child born to Emma Troge. When his mother married Alvin G. Roehr on July 10, 1907, Clyde became a member of the family Alvin already had. Alvin had been left with three small children when his wife Katharine passed away June 1, 1906.

Clyde was given the Roehr name. He spent the first years of his life with the family on the farm in West Cedar Township. Then, the family moved to the new farm Alvin bought in 1914 from E.J. Howe, 4 ½ miles southwest of Osage. Clyde attended No. 9 School along with four of the other Roehr children, Elsie, Loren, Ella, and Leonard.

On March 3, 1926 Clyde married Verna Emelia Decklever. I remember Verna telling about the time Clyde came to see her before they married and he said, “Bet you can’t guess what we have new at our home”. Verna said she guessed everything from a new calf, a litter of pigs, to a new colt. Finally Clyde told her, “I have a new brother.” It was I, Alvin Dale, who had been born.

Clyde and Verna started farming on the Dr. Louis Savre farm a mile north of the home farm. They farmed there until 1941 then farmed in Union Township near Toeterville until 1945.

They retired to St. Ansgar and one Sunday in church Clyde had a stroke. He never recovered completely and spent most of his time in a wheelchair. Verna’s health was not good. Finally both of them had to go into a nursing home in St. Ansgar.

Verna had bone cancer and passed away December 11, 1982.

Clyde’s health gradually worsened, he gave up the will to live and passed away June 23, 1984. They are buried in the Osage Cemetery.

They were married 56 years before Verna’s death.
