ST. ANSGAR - Howard Madsen, 91, of St. Ansgar died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Good Samaritan Society Center, St. Ansgar.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Dr. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St., St. Ansgar.

ST. ANSGAR - Howard Madsen, 91, of St. Ansgar died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Good Samaritan Society Center, St. Ansgar.

Howard L. Madsen was born May 16, 1920, in Mitchell, the son of Martin C. and Doris Elizabeth (Coon) Madsen. He attended Mitchell Consolidated School for his elementary schooling. His family moved near St. Ansgar in his freshman year of school and operated the Madsen' Grade A Gurnsey Dairy where he helped with the family business. He graduated in May 1937.
On February 23, 1941, he married Elda Feldt and commenced to farm with his father-in-law, Emil Feldt, west of St. Ansgar on their family farm. They moved to the Albert Feldt farm north of Grafton where he and Elda farmed and cared for her grandfather. In 1946, they moved to their current farm west of St. Ansgar where together they farmed and raised their three children.
Howard served on many community boards including the Immanuel Church Council, Mitchell County Extension Council, St. Ansgar School Board, North Iowa Hereford Association and Mitchell County Fairboard where he was beef superintendent for many years.He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
Howard is survived by his children, Sarah (Gary) Moore of Riceville, Arthur (Judy) Madsen of Faribault, Minn., and Lester of St. Ansgar; one sister, Marvel Kulsrud of Clarkston, Wash.; five grandchildren: Emily (Matt) Smalley of Mankato, Minn., Tim (Diana) Moore of Riceville, Kelly Moore of Charlotte, N.C., Jeff Moore of Polk City, and Bryan Madsen of Owatonna, Minn.; great grandsons Jordan and Hunter Madsen of Owatonna, Andrew Moore of Riceville and Caroline Smalley of Mankato, Minn.; six nieces and one nephew.
