Lois Ruth (Simpson) Gilles 1911-1997

Lois Gilles, 85, Torrance, CA, formerly of Riceville, died January 17, 1997, in a Torrance hospital.

Lois was born April 23, 1911, at Charles City to Ervin and Beth Simpson. She was raised and educated in Council Bluffs (& Peetz, Colorado), and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College with a diploma in elementary education in 1929.

She started teaching in Riceville where she taught for seven years. On June 1, 1935, She married John Gilles and lived in Riceville until 1946, when they moved to Lyndon Station, WI.

In 1949 they moved to Garrison, ND, where she was employed at the Garrison Memorial Hospital. In 1956 they moved to Torrance, CA, where she was employed as the purchasing agent at Torrance Memorial Hospital until retiring in 1982.

John Gilles died December 3, 1965 and Lois maintained her home in Torrance until her death.

Survivors include sons, Gordon, Minot, ND; William, Glastonbury, CT, daughters, Mary Gilles, Torrance, CA; and Theresa Mahon, San Diego, CA; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral was January 20, at Nativity Catholic Church in Torrance and burial was in All Souls Cemetery at Long Beach, CA.
